Hornsea 3 Land Drainage Programme Reaches Completion

William Morfoot Ltd has recently completed its post-construction land drainage programme on the Hornsea 3 onshore cable route, bringing to a close almost four years of involvement in the what will be the largest offshore windfarm in the world when complete.

The £8.5 billion Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm represents a major investment in the UK’s future energy security. When operational, its turbines will have a generating capacity of 2.9GW – sufficient to provide renewable electricity for more than three million UK homes. The project is also incorporating battery storage at scale, allowing surplus renewable energy to be stored and released back into the grid when it is most needed.

For William Morfoot Ltd, involvement in Hornsea 3 began in autumn 2022, when our design team commenced work on the extensive land drainage requirements associated with the onshore cable installation.

More Than 50km of Challenging Cable Route

The onshore cable route extends for more than 50km across the Norfolk countryside and passes through fields belonging to 84 separate landowners. The scale and complexity of the project has required close coordination between a large number of contractors, landowners and project stakeholders.

William Morfoot Ltd was responsible for the design and implementation of the pre- and post-construction land drainage requirements along the route.

During the pre-construction phase, our priority was to manage existing drainage systems and control incoming groundwater so that cable installation could proceed in the correct conditions. This required careful planning and sequencing of our activities around the many other construction operations taking place along the route.

As the main construction works progressed, our attention increasingly moved towards reinstatement.

Putting the Land Back into Agricultural Production

The post-construction drainage programme has involved our teams installing new drainage infrastructure and addressing legacy drainage issues resulting from construction of the cable route.

For the affected landowners, this is a particularly important part of the reinstatement process.

Once a major infrastructure project passes through agricultural land, simply replacing the soil is not enough. Existing drainage systems may have been intercepted or disrupted, while changes to soil structure can alter how water moves through the ground.

Our job has therefore been to ensure that effective drainage is restored so that the affected fields can return to productive agricultural use with as seamless a transition as possible.

This has involved working across a wide variety of soil types, field conditions and existing drainage systems. Each location has presented different challenges and has required our teams to apply the specialist agricultural drainage knowledge that William Morfoot Ltd has developed over more than six decades.

Safety, Compliance and Communication

Delivering our work successfully has required far more than technical drainage expertise.

At peak periods, hundreds of people from numerous organisations have been working across the Hornsea 3 project simultaneously. Operating safely within such a large and constantly changing construction environment has required exceptional standards of communication, planning and compliance.

Safety has remained front and centre throughout our involvement. Our teams have worked closely with the wider project delivery team to coordinate activities, manage interfaces with other contractors and ensure that our work could be undertaken safely and efficiently.

Just as importantly, we have had to remain flexible. Over almost four years, our programme has continually needed to fit around the activities of numerous other subcontractors and the changing demands of one of the largest infrastructure projects currently being delivered in the UK. Despite that complexity, our objective has remained straightforward: deliver our work safely, on time and to budget, while maintaining the highest possible standards of workmanship.

Nearly Four Years of Involvement

Completing the post-construction drainage programme represents an important milestone for William Morfoot Ltd.

From the first drainage design work undertaken in autumn 2022 through to the final stages of reinstatement in 2026, Hornsea 3 has required input from across our business and has demonstrated the increasingly important role that specialist land drainage expertise plays in major infrastructure construction.

As the land along the cable corridor returns to agricultural production, the drainage infrastructure installed beneath it will continue performing its role for decades to come.

For William Morfoot Ltd, that is ultimately what successful reinstatement looks like: enabling nationally significant infrastructure to be constructed while ensuring that the agricultural land through which it passes can be returned to its owners in a condition that allows productive farming to continue.
