Culvert construction for the MOD

Expert engineering for access over a challenging MOD waterway

Building a vital crossing over a major watercourse When a 10,000-acre catchment area feeds into a main watercourse, access becomes a challenge. This was the case at Beckingham Rifle Range, owned by the Ministry of Defence, where a key waterway near the River Witham made it difficult for a local landowner to cross their own fields. To solve the issue, our team was commissioned to design and install a 3m x 2m steel culvert, creating a stable crossing while ensuring uninterrupted water flow.

Precision engineering in action

The bespoke culvert, made from pre-fabricated galvanised steel sheets, was carefully bolted together and lifted into place using a 21-tonne excavator. At 3.5 tonnes, it required expert handling to ensure precise installation.

Completed in just one week, the new structure now efficiently channels water while supporting a bridge overhead, allowing the farmer to cross the land with ease.

Built to last, designed for compliance

As with all our projects, the work was carried out in full compliance with Internal Drainage Board regulations, protecting the integrity of the surrounding watercourse.

Whether a project is large or small, our focus remains the same—providing long-term, effective solutions tailored to each site’s specific needs.

Key takeaways

  • Fast and efficient installation – The entire culvert was designed, constructed, and installed within just one week, minimising disruption.
  • Durable, long-term solution – Built from pre-fabricated galvanised steel sheets, the culvert is engineered to withstand heavy use and harsh conditions.

  • Regulatory compliance – Designed in line with Internal Drainage Board specifications, ensuring proper water flow and environmental protection.
