Culvert Construction for the MOD

Our drainage projects come in all shapes and sizes and our project for the MOD was no exception.

Our teams constructed a 3m x 2m steel pipe culvert in a main watercourse next to the River Witham in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The river runs through the Beckingham Rifle Range, which is owned by the Ministry of Defence. Parallel to the river is the main watercourse, which is surrounded by pastureland on both sides and flows into the river picking up water from the adjacent land.

A staggering 10,000 acre catchment area feeds into the watercourse making it difficult for the surrounding land owner to cross over and access his land with ease.

To solve the problem, we built a bespoke culvert from pre-fabricated galvanised steel sheets which were bolted together. Weighing in at 3.5 tonnes we had to use a 21 tonne excavator to lift the culvert into the water course and install it.

Taking just a week to complete, the culvert now successfully channels the water, whilst providing the foundations of a bridge overhead, enabling the farmer to easily get from one side to the other.

We regularly work alongside various authorities and organisations to preserve the welfare of the surrounding countryside and to ensure we follow agency protocols. As the watercourse is the responsibility of the Internal Drainage Board, our work was built to be compliant with their specifications.

Any project, big or small, gets very personal treatment with William Morfoot Ltd and the construction of this new culvert not only guarantees an effective solution but has been built to last.
