Ponds & Habitat Creation

From time to time we get to work in a corner of England which is – quite simply, a little slice of paradise!  These locations are nestled in the mosaic of larger arable fields and are often very inaccessible and away from centres of population.  As a result, these spots are typically incredibly peaceful and bursting with wildlife at certain times of the year and are also quite often stunning bits of the countryside to work in amongst!

Our brief on this project was to create a new pond in an area of very low lying and wet grazing meadows.  The meadows are enclosed by very tall trees at the bottom of a valley with a stream trickling through the valley bottom which sources water from the surrounding ground.

The project was looked at initially by our own ecologist who worked with the landowner to understand his vision to create an area of water which would deliver and promote greater biodiversity and habitat within the site.  The pond was created with varying water depths and special care was taken some of the more established flora and fauna around the pond perimeter.  Water levels were carefully managed during the pond build and care was taken by our team to ensure the client’s requirements were closely adhered to.

Works were completed on time and to budget and the area is going to be left to naturally regenerate which will happen quickly through the spring months.  We heard woodpeckers in the surrounding trees whilst our team was on site and with a little bit of time, we are certain that this meadow – which was already a haven for wildlife will offer even greater biodiversity.  A really great project to work on!
