Fenland Land Drainage
In the winter of 2024/25, our company has been involved in delivering a large scale agricultural land drainage project to a long standing client who has worked with us over many years. The fenland farm grows a diverse variety of specialist crops and the below sea level fields are all typically dominated by a heavy clay impermeable subsoil – meaning that natural drainage is impeded and problematic.
William Morfoot Ltd was tasked with undertaking a detailed TOPO survey across a large area of the farm which consisted of obtaining data from within the fields and also within the surrounding water courses. The farm is completely serviced by an internal drainage board – meaning that all private dykes on the farm need to be adequately maintained to hold water levels at very precise levels – ensuring that water flows in the correct direction.
Our designers worked collaboratively with the farm owners to agree a works program consisting of ditching improvement works and land drainage installation with around 250 acres of land being drained as part of the planned works this winter.
All works have been completed on time and to budget enabling the landowners to proceed with planned prep works for the upcoming spring season as required. In spite of this winter being a drier season than last year, the land drains were all running as they were installed! – a satisfying site to see!
